mind the gap

25 August 2005

Woke up early this morning to arrange Sky installation. No problems, except he got lost and had to ring to find out where the house was. FINALLY we are back in the land of normal TV viewing.

I drove to work (HA! Love saying that!!) and got the scoop on what I need to be teaching and when. I'm in a daze about most of it because classes don't end here when the school year ends. Students come back to the same teacher in the autumn and continue with the work they started before. Doh! There is no getting rid of the horrible boys who have a V in their names. (Trust me, this is something I have down to a precise science. Boys with a V in their names are trouble. Have you ever met a nice Travis? Or Kevin? I rest my case.) I'm going to be inheriting a Yr 11 group from a teacher who just couldn't work with this group, mostly because he wasn't their beloved teacher from the year before. My other Yr 11 group is on a modified schedule because they just aren't being successful in regular scheduled school. My Yr 10 is a low group and their teacher from last year thinks a few of them are just miserable wankers. Great.

I'm overwhelmed and don't feel like I have any idea what I'm doing. I really do feel like I'm out of my element. But my head of English seems to have faith in me. I just want to be good at my job, I want to be an excellent teacher here. There's so much I don't know.

One day at a time.
