mind the gap

03 August 2007

I decided not to go to school today because my house was feeling rather neglected. The lawn out front was embarrassingly unkempt and the back is awaiting its turn next. Once it cools off, of course because it's been unbearable the last few days. I miss the 80F days. I'm also a bit tired of dealing with my still unorganized classroom. The dog has been extra clingy and I hadn't done the dishes in more days that I want to publicly admit.

So, it was a stay at home kinda day. I've still got laundry to fold and the back lawn to mow but the floors are clean, the dishes are done, garbage taken out, and I made a nice pesto for lunch.

I had a good chat with my dept. chair yesterday morning. It turns out my new school DOES use novels, contrary to what my principal told me. I told her she had made my entire school year. The current trend in CA high schools is to use only the state approved textbook put out by Holt Publishing. Some schools adopted the book and use it as we always have used textbooks, as a supplement to novels. And some schools basically shelved novels in favor of the book. Why? Because the book is geared toward the exit exam and the standardized tests we take in April. Obviously novels aren't on the tests so those go to the bottom of the pile. My wretched school was basically that way which was why I got reamed for using novels more than the book. However, I had a 87% pass rate for my sophomores on the exit exam so my former principal can fucking kiss my ass. But I digress. Needless to say, I'm quite relieved that my new school uses novels.

Someone has been quite demanding of attention today and when these paws swat, people listen.

They are even bigger in person.
