mind the gap

11 June 2006

Oh so I was RIGHT about my cousin's wedding thing. My parents and I were the only representatives from our side of the family. We arrived and the food had just been laid out for the buffet in the kitchen. My aunt can't cook a blessed thing so everything was store bought, except for the chicken and tri-tip my uncle BBQed. Potato salad, fruit salad, a broccoli thing that had HUGE florets in it and was impossible to eat. Oh, and some of the wine? WAS SPOILED. People were outside visiting and a few were watching the wedding DVD. After everyone had eaten, my uncle made a toast to the happy couple and they cut the hideous cake with little to no fanfare. So disappointing, all the way around. My cousin was wearing shorts, flip flops AND a backwards cap. She at least had on a skirt but she barely said hello to us all evening. Her old HS friends were more fun to chat with than her pesky new family. No one from her family was there. NO ONE.
We did get to visit with my aunt's family who we rarely see and few family friends, which was really nice. I was so grateful that my parents were exhausted from their work day at the cabin that they didn't want to stick around for long. I think we were the first to leave. I asked my cousin why they decided to run off and get married, not even telling anyone they were engaged. He said it's because he doesn't like crowds of people and even a backyard BBQ was freaking him out. Dude, whatever. You screwed your parents and siblings out of the chance to participate in this exciting part of your life. There is no shortage of bitterness in that nuclear family now. Great way to start a marriage!
